@Plod: not sure it's used like that in the UK. Although I've not lived there for some years it certainly was not when I was growing up there.
It's only listed as a US usage in Oxford and Cambridge dictionaries, and as slang is some others, and I suspect it has indeed come from a distortion/misspelling of scoff.
