Maybe I should have given people 10 minutes ;-) One never really intends the things to be unsolvably fiendish.
The sign of four is one of the 4 Sherlock Holmes novels. I've not heard of the other one.

@Mister Tom I think the Sherlock Holmes novel is called "The Sign of the Four" but it looks as though both variants are listed.
Anyway, great fun and (at least) ten minutes would have helped me. :)
